Significant differences in access persist across socioeconomic segments
Last updated: 02/02/2024
The available information allows for a deeper analysis of the digital divide within countries along two dimensions: socioeconomic segment and area of residence.
Income-based divide
The evolution of the digital divide within countries shows considerable heterogeneity, with cases of both narrowing and widening over the past 13 years. Regarding the digital divide in Internet access by household income level, Chile and Paraguay represent two extreme cases. In Chile, the gap in access between households in the highest and lowest income quintiles (Q5 and Q1) declined from 51 percentage points in 2009 to 4.5 percentage points in 2022. By contrast, in Paraguay, this differential increased from 29.5 percentage points in 2009 to 70.4 in 2022.

Urban–Rural Divide
The digital divide in Internet access between urban and rural households also reveals different trajectories. In some cases, the gap can reach nearly 50 percentage points within a single country, while in others it is much smaller, with differentials of around 10 percentage points.
